We Were Made for More

Using found photographs collected over several months from a local flea market and vintage retailer in Helsinki together with mixed media including glass glitter, the blackest acrylic paint, dried flowers and hand embroidered glass beads, We Were Made for More illustrates how historical photographs are popularly interpreted on the Internet and through social media.

The work also suggests how photographs can be interpreted and critically analysed as culturally significant, meaningful discrete historical objects that bridge the past and present rather than the means through which we can illustrate history.

The series is currently work-in-progress.

Rebecca Sandelin currently lives and works in Helsinki and Espoo, Finland. Her photographic practice is interdisciplinary, combining a research-based focus on intersections between photography, photographic and art history, social and cultural theory, new media and technology studies. Her primary interests lie in exploring the ontology of photographic images and how reality and liminal spaces are represented photographically. She also has a keen interest in the materiality, archival contexts and digital afterlives of photographic images and objects. Her photographic projects combine photography, writing and art installation while her scholarly work includes long-and-short form research essays and reviews.
