How Little is Enough, ceramic art

Leena Mäki-Patola describes her process: "It has been a common trend to strive for something bigger, flashier and more effective. I have found the trend exhausting. In this exhibition I try to minimize both the material and the expression. The nuances of white are the only things that are needed. The works seem to blend in with the background wall itself.

The ceramic works are thin plates covered in multiple very thin layers of glazings. In the heat of the firing the layers of materials blend together and form crystals, bubbles, craters, dribbles, stretchings, dim and shiny parts, all in different subtle shades of white.

The scarcity of elements helps to slow down and concentrate - to see more in less. "

Leena Mäki-Patola lives and works in Varkaus. She graduated from University of Industrial Arts Helsinki, ceramic art department in 1983. Her main material is ceramics while she also uses other materials and techniques.
