Antti Ylönen

Urban landscapes

Antti Ylönen lives and works in Ii, Northern Finland. He is sculptor and photographer best known for his wooden sculptures. In the past few years sculpting has made way for photography. "My photographs are like paintings with camera, urban landscapes. I pay attention to details, especially in architecture and details that depict dilapitation and decay.  The photographs in this exhibition were taken in Japan, Germany, Estonia, Denmark and Italy. "

Deniz Hartikainen

Rugs, on Drugs, textile art

The exhibition 'Rugs on Drugs’ consists of hand-tufted psychedelic wall rugs. Aiming that each rug in the exhibition is a conversation starter for the visitors. Deniz Hartikainen (b.1993) is a Turkish-Kurdish textile artist based in Jyväskylä. The ‘Rugs on Drugs exhibition in the Book Gallery is her first solo exhibition in Finland.

Significant Symbols, bronze sculptures

Hanna Galtat is a visual artist based in Finland and France. She has a multidisciplinary background in fine art, design and art history. The exhibition Significant Symbols consists of an installation of small bronze sculptures of symbols that sketch out common agreements in our civilisation. They comment on and question the symbols’ meaning and the memory of their material sometimes humorously, sometimes a little more seriously.

In memory of Simo Rista

Through Simppa's eyes

Simo Rista (1933-2021) was a photographer based here in Kruununhaka, Helsinki. His path in photography started at the age of 14 in 1947 and he began his career as a professional photographer in the 1960s. His multifaceted career included art photography, portraiture and architetcture photography. Simo Rista held over 50 exhibitions, many of them here in Laterna Magica's galleries. Thus we at Laterna Magica want to pay tribute to the legacy and work of Simo Rista with an exhibition curated by his partner of over 20 years, Hannele Salminen.

Helsinki Art School

outside inside, Graduating exhibition

The Helsinki Art School is an art school that provides basic art education for children and youths between the ages of 4 and 20. The graduating class, Kurkottaja students, present an exhibition called ulkona sisällä, or outside inside which consists of work done in the past year. Kurkottaja students have worked independently with their projects throughout the year of the pandemic. The name outside inside does not refer to the graduating work itself as much as if refers to the challenging circumstances. They are the age group that has had to study remotely for over a year already. They have been forced to a life outside but indoors. Still this exhibition is a testament to their tenacity as they managed to get these projects done.

Jarkko Martikainen and Ilkka Vuojala

Fat Skeletons - Lihavia luurankoja, illustrated songs

Jarkko Martikainen is Finnish musician and writer whose career spans three decades. His 2020 book Lihavia luurankoja (Like,2020), Fat Skeletons brought together Martikainen's stories behind his most famous lyrics and songs as well as illustrations by both Jarkko and artist Ilkka Vuojala. The exhibition in Laterna Magica's cellar gallery will present Jarkko Martikainen's music together with his illustrations as well as paintings and drawings by Ilkka Vuojala.

Alex Markwith (b. 1988, Kingston, PA) is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland, where he moved in September 2020 after living and working for nine years in New York City. Elemental Transmissions is the artist's sixth solo exhibition, and his first in Finland.

There have been many twists and turns in Kari Holopainen's artistic path. Its sidepaths reach music, book art, painting, print and photography. Holopainen is best known for developing and teaching Polymer photogravure as well as for his uniquely exquisite books and photo portfolios, which combine methods from both photography and print-making.
