Elemental Transmissions

Elemental Transmissions is a site-specific response to the Laterna Magica gallery space, playing with ideas of physical change and perception in both an abstract and direct sense. lex Markwith (b. 1988, Kingston, PA) is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland, wherehe moved in September 2020 after living and working for nine years in New York City. Elemental Transmissions is the artist's sixth solo exhibition, and his first in Finland.

Things (or less), an exhibition of black and white photography by Dietmar Tallroth delves into the theme of consumerism.Through buy-and-discard behaviour waste mountains grow, resources are depleted and the whole biosphere, nature on which we ourselves depend, suffers. But can we even change? This project tries to fall in love with things we already own. It attempts to see things not as something that merely serves our needs or desires, but as shapes, materials, objects in their own right and in various and new contexts.

There have been many twists and turns in Kari Holopainen's artistic path. Its sidepaths reach music, book art, painting, print and photography. Holopainen is best known for developing and teaching Polymer photogravure as well as for his uniquely exquisite books and photo portfolios, which combine methods from both photography and print-making. Kari Holopainen's exhibition Polku – Path, and the book by the same name will collect together the many paths of Holopainen's career. In our Tile and Cellar Galleries we will have an exhibition by Jenni Haili called Other I presenting several series of works, which reflect the themes of identity, otherness and fear while they also include themes from fairytales and play. Jarmo Lehtinen's photography exhibition Gottfried's world consists of gelatin silver prints . Lehtinen takes his black and white photographs with analogue cameras which some consider to be vintage gadgets these days.  Lehtinen's debut novel Keskusteluja Gottfried koiran kanssa (Conversations with Gottried the dog) was launched together with the exhibition opening.

Markku Joutsen had his exhibition originally scheduled in March 2020 just when the pandemic hit and everything, this exhibition included had to close. Now we have a new chance to take a closer look at Joutsen's fascinating bromoil prints in Laterna's cellar gallery in July 2020. Markku Joutsen does not have an exhibition opening on July 21st, but will be present at gallery on July 25th from 10 AM to 3 PM whole day.

Mika Jokinen

Mika Jokinen is an anaesthesiologist who during spring of 2020 worked in the special ward M2 in Meilahti hospital, which was set up to treat patients with covid-19. Jokinen photographed his colleagues and the every daylife in the hospital ward during the epidemic and his unique photographs can be seen for the first time in an exhibition at gallery Laterna Magica from June 24th until July 18th 2020.

In our Book Gallery we will have an exhibition Portaits and stories by the Kapybara collective. Kapybara collective was established in 2016 and consists of artists Heidi Wikström and Tuula Turunen. The collective works with photography, sound and dance in multidisciplinary projects which often engage with topics such as fairytales and imaginary worlds. In this exhibition the collective takes a closer look in the imaginary worlds of small toys.
