The photo exhibition Learning in Progress, a journey of learning, tells the story of the identity change and transformation process of students in psychoanalytic candidate programme. The exhibition will be on view at the Laterna Magica Book Gallery from 28 April to 23 May 2026. Exhibition opening on Tuesday April 28th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Warm welcome!
Change is neither easy nor voluntary after a certain point. It ultimately invites one in and takes one along. The candidates of the 33rd class of the Finnish Psychoanalytic Association will graduate as psychoanalysts in May 2026. What has the winding road we have traveled opened up in terms of prospects? Embracing the new is not only fillden with the joy of learning, but includes the elements of profound change in the rhythmic interaction of internal and external factors.
Näyttelyn koordinaattori Niina Rita taustoittaa näyttelyn syntyä: "Idea valokuvanäyttelyyn syntyi erään perjantaiseminaarin jälkipyykissä Lapinlahden sairaalan kahvilassa. Esittelin varsin pähkähullua ideaa opiskelukaverilleni Kim Storlundille. Kotini järjestys oli vähitellen ajautunut kaaokseen ja mietin, olenko ainoa opiskelija, jolla panostaminen yhteen alueeseen jättää jonkun toisen alueen alleen, tässä tapauksessa konkreettisesti: Läksyartikkelit olivat hautautuneet tiskipöydälle, astiavuoren alle. Tämän kiusallisen tosiasian esittelin esimerkkikuvin opiskelutovereille, ja he tarttuivat ideaan: ”Tässä on valmistujaispäivän yksi ohjelmanumero!” Ehdotin, että opiskelijat kuvaavat arkea opiskeluiden ollessa intensiivisimmillään ja sitten määränpään häämöttäessä taivaanrannassa.
Exhibition coordinator Niina Rita explains the background to the exhibition: "The idea for the photo exhibition came about after a Friday seminar in the cafeteria of Lapinlahti Hospital. I presented a rather crazy idea to my study friend Kim Storlund. The order in my home had gradually descended into chaos and I wondered if I was the only student for whom focusing on one area left another area undone, in this case concretely: The homework articles were buried under the dishes on the kitchen counter. I presented this embarrassing fact to my fellow students with example pictures, and they took to the idea: "Here is one program item for graduation day!" I suggested that the students describe everyday life when their studies were at their most intensive and then when the destination was looming on the horizon.
The photographs tell the story of the reflections of an internal process on external reality, forming a narrative. Environmental phenomena, everyday fault lines and changes in life management are set as a path at their observation points. The titles of the works lead the viewer to delve deeper into the message of the picture. The pictures have relatable mischief and humor, friction and joy that taste of life."
The pictures have been processed for the exhibition by photographer Petri Parkkonen and curated by analyst candidate Niina Rita. Candidates Ninni Rehnberg, Piia Rantakokko, Tarja Parkkonen and Maija Karakorpi have been involved in organizing the exhibition.
