It will be 30 years since the wall that devided Germany came down. What was life like behind the wall? How did it feel to become a part of unified Germany? Exhibition presents people from the former DDR, who lived behind the wall and have, since the wall came down in 1989, changed the course of their lives.

The story of this exhibition starts in 1990. The year is tumultuous in East Germany as people are trying to find new direction in their lives. For some people that period was a personal disaster while others felt relieved to start building their lives anew. For everyone the change was as sudden and as complete. A trip to Leipzig in 1990, riding in a bright yellow Wartburg lead to those people and stories that are the beginning of this exhibition and the accompanying book with the same name.

People in this exhibtion take the viewer all the way from DDR to present day Germany. History is entwined in personal stories, through which new perspectives into present day Europe are opened.

Kati Koivikko is a journalist and photographer from Helsinki, who has photographed in the former eastern Germany since 2004.
