Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints from Tuula Moilanen's collection in this exhibition show us the hidden worlds of geisha life, just behind the make-up mirror. The beauties depicted in these woodblock prints were the celebrities of their age, whose hair and make-up styles were eagerly copied in Edo era Japan. The woodblock prints and leaflets bore a lot of information about the kimono prints and colours of the era. In addition to these prints the exhibition will also present prints with make-up styles from kabuki-theatre. In the theatre the strong make-up and fused gender roles are a part of the magic. These woodblock prints depicting the stage performers offered some welcome respite in everyday life.
