Kirsi Korpela is a photographer based in Turku, Finland. She describes her Vanitas-exhibition: "I am interested in different genres of photography, and different ways to develop photgraphs. At the moment my main interest is in artistic approach, through which pictures send a message through the aesthetics as well as by provoking thoughts. I mostly photograph still lives, nature, people and animals.

The exhibition in Laterna Magica is Vanitas-themed and consists of photographs for which I have built still lives and installations. The works are almost painting like photographs which have not been altered by digital means. 17th century Dutch vanitas paintings depicted the transcience of life and certainty of death through ephemera. The paintings were often photograph like in sharpness, with folded fabrics and light reflections. Years ago on my trip to London and National Gallery I was pondering if it would be possible to make photography version of these works and if was possible to capture the painterly qualities in photography.
