This program can be called some sort of voyage of exploration inspired by the unique and poetic score of Pauline Oliveros “13 Changes”. The score by Oliveros is composed by 13 small texts that bring the performers in front of a world of possibilities. For example, Pauline asks to the performers to imagine how would it sound a piece about monkeys landing on Mars, or what are the songs sung from ancient mothers among awesome rocks?
The flutist Livia Schweizer (IT/CH) and the accordionist Manca Dornik (SI) will perform a version of Pauline Oliveros’ piece especially designed for Laterna Magica, indeed they will include in their “musical score” texts and fragments of poems found within the bookstore.
The concert will also include music by Turkka Inkilä and Rebecca Saunders. The solo flute piece by Inkilä is a collection of 7 small pieces inspired by the planets; planets are mysterious and faraway, but every planet carries within them myth and symbols coming from our antiquity. Indeed, those planets are the one that gave name to those roman gods in which is possible to recognize many human qualities -anddefects-.
Rebecca Saunders’s music will bring us back from the skies to earthly feelings and intimacy. Flesh for solo accordion uses the interior monologue of Molly Bloom from the final chapter of Ulysses and wants to be an exploration of the different sound changes and colors offered by the combination of voice and accordion.
While programming this concert we also realized that Flesh is a special piece to perform in a bookstore during the 100 birthday of James Joyce Ulysses!-
The concert will be approx. 45 minutes long.
