Each piece is handmade, unique, and shaped by time and chance.

Tapio Säävälä's exhibition Old Gentlemen European, which will be held in the Book Gallery space of Laterna Magica, is a collection of black and white photographs from the 1980s of old gentlemen in cities in different countries just passing the time, doing their business, and hurrying to or from somewhere.Exhibition opening on Tue February 17th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Cia Karlsson's exhibition in the Tile Gallery and on the Small Stage opens on Tuesday evening, Jan 27th, 5-7 p.m. Warm Welcome! My subjects are stuffed animals found in flea market stalls. These important substitutes for parents, loved and even manhandled by children, or in psychologists' language, transitional objects, had already fulfilled their function and become unnecessary.

Welcome to the opening reception for the exhibitions of Tue January 27th, 5-7 p.m. In this exhibition, nature acts as a metaphor for the cycle of life, birth, death and rebirth. Withering flowers and plants wrinkle and dry like human skin, I find them beautiful and I observe with interest how matter changes in both us humans and plants.

That year was a special one in my life: I had moved from my childhood home in Espoo to live on my own in the city centre of Helsinki. During that year, I ended up dropping out of my technical studies, as photography, which had started as a hobby, had taken a strong hold on me.

Over the past ten years I have mostly photographed people on the streets of Helsinki. During the dark season, I mostly take dark images like the ones on display right now, where people appear as anonymous passersby, blurred figures. The boat has sunk, only the structures of the house remain, the sauna roof has collapsed and the stove has disappeared. The Finnish countryside has undergone major changes in recent decades. In search of work, people have moved to towns, big cities and abroad, and many small villages that were once vibrant have withered. In his staged photographs, Johan Eichhorn brings to life times gone by, while showing that these times are over and will never return. A memorial exhibition for Marko Hellman, who passed away in November 2025, will be presented at Laterna Magica in early December. The opening reception of the exhibition on Tuesday, December 2, from 5-7 p.m.

Tapio Heikkilä's scenic documentation of Fårö island off Gotland presents the island in three acts. Exhibition opens with a reception on Tuesday Dec 2nd from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Warm welcome.

The Wet Language is a constantly growing series of photographic collage images around questions of language, the body, identity, alienation and belonging: the Dadaist who meets his twin brother. Many of the images have autobiographical undertones.

Ismo Hölttö, known for his perceptive black-and-white portraits of the 1960s depicting the everyday lives of city folks and country people, unexpectedly returned to photography in the spring of 2023, and his new subject was something completely different. When walking around the city, Hölttö's gaze was now fixed on electrical cabinets, drainpipes and the surfaces of lamp posts instead of people.

Helena Marja Teräväinen is an architect, Doctor of Technology, currently a freelance researcher and photographer.‍ Her exhibition wants to highlight the importance of permanence in architecture – instead of the madness of demolition.

The exhibition Fragile Threads of Time consists of tannin-patinated cyanotype prints printed on watercolor paper. The images were taken in empty building interiors and courtyards in my home region of Satakunta. They are details of the passage of time and forgetting.

My pictures depict moments, feelings and boundaries. Through them I want to share a story – about the reality or unreality of one woman. About the voices, imaginations and visions of the mind.
