Exhibitions

The exhibition consists of a dialogue between photographs, watercolors and words. The starting point for the whole is a series of photographs that progress in time from the same place and object, a childhood friend by the water, through several years and seasons. ”Heinäkuun Yö - A July Night is an exhibition inspired by a surrealist short story written by Bruno Schultz (1892-1942) , a polish jewish writer who lived in Drohobych, Austrian Galicia, today part of Ukraine. The exhibition consists of collage paintings on paper and canvas, artist books, beeswax sculptures and a musical videowork .Exhibition opening on Tuesday June 27th from 5-7 PM. Warm welcome!

Ville Pirinen (b.1973) was born in Kitee and lives in Tampere. He is a comics artist and writer and musician. His exhibition in Laterna Magica's Tile and Cellar galleries consists of both older material and works that have been made for this exhibition with the said felt tip pen. Paula Haapalahti's photography exhibition opens in Laterna Magica's Book Gallery space in May. Haapalahti describes her process: "The photographs in this exhibition reflect my thoughts and experiences in the past 10 years. At first I thought this project might be only for myself but maybe by sharing these works I can share something of myself and reach into the viewers' experience, the space between." Primavera! Oh lovely spring! Welcome to the opening of the spring exhibition by Toimela print workshop on Tuesday May 2nd from 5-7 PM. This group exhibition presents fine art prints from Toimela print maker courses which are lead by Sari Bremer. The exhibition covers several techniques used in fine art printing such as etching, aquatint, wood carving and carborundum.

The Helsinki Art School is an art school that provides basic art education for children and youths between the ages of 4 and 20. This year the graduating class presents works that include many meaningful themes that are visible in their world. The works present memories, ways of being, feelings, places, relationships between people and forms of life.

Opening and Book launch on April 4th from 5-7 PM in the Book Gallery space is photography by Edith Södergran (1892 –1923) in an exhibition Maailma on minun - The World is Mine. Södergran was a Swedish-speaking Finnish poet, one of the first modernists within Swedish-language literature and loved by generations of readers. Agneta Rahikainen and Eira Sillanpää have collected Södergran's poetry and photography into a book and an exhibition, which bears the name Maailma on minun - The World is Mine. The book comes out in two languages, Edith Södergrans mother-tongue Swedish and in translation in Finnish.

Exhibition Omia mea mecum porto - All that is mine I carry with me in Laterna Magica's Tile and Cellar Galleries consists of light art, installations and collages. Artists Jyrki Sinisalo and Mari Vallemaa both work in the Roihupelto art quarter and are also members in the art association Taidekortteli ry. The idea for this joint exhibition was born after visiting each others' studio spaces.  Meet the artists on the the last day of the exhibition Sat April 29 from 1-3 PM at the gallery. Warm welcome.

Essi Hurme's exhibition consists of ceramic sculptures and pastel paintings. The pastel paintings by Essi Hurme are portraits and colour studies of imaginary persons. Her ceramic sculptures or"sitters", as she calls them are a part of a larger series that has been ongoing for years and this exhibition lets some of the sitters take their place on the Book gallery walls. The joint exhibition of Miia Kallio and Otto Santala, "Obstacles" in Gallery Laterna Magica's Cellar and Tile Galleries consists of ceramic sculptures, oil paintings, and video works. Kallio is a visual and ceramic artist, focusing on the use of Finnish red clay, or "wild clay" in her work. Santala, a visual artist, also uses photography and moving images in his expression.Meet the artists at the gallery on Saturday March 25th

Ari Jaskari (b,1958) is known for his photos depicting the Saimaa lake district and the people on its shores. His photography exhibition and book Oma koti - Sweet home are based on material that Jaskari photographed in his home town Anttola in the early 1980's. The photographs offer intimate glimpses into Jaskari's family life and community, everyday life.

Risto Moberg's andd Jaru Alponpoika Kokkinen's significant collection of erotic art will be exhibited in the galleries of Laterna Magica in early February 2023. Exhibition consists of photography, posters, prints, paintings and sculptures. Exhibition opening on Tuesday January 31st from 5-7 PM. Warm welcome.

Moments at the Cemetery Hetkiä hautausmaalla -exhibition consists of photographs and a video that was filmed with a pinhole camera at the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki.
