Anniversary exhibitions

Laterna Magica 35

In the spring of 2024, we will celebrate Laterna's 35-year history with several anniversary exhibitions. The opening of the exhibitions will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 9. from 5 to 7 p.m. The opening celebration poem is recited by poet Petra Vallila and the celebration songs are served by Loiriplukari.‍

Miia Kallio and Otto Santala

Obstacles, ceramic sculptures, oil paintings and video works

The joint exhibition of Miia Kallio and Otto Santala, "Obstacles" in Gallery Laterna Magica's Cellar and Tile Galleries consists of ceramic sculptures, oil paintings, and video works. Kallio is a visual and ceramic artist, focusing on the use of Finnish red clay, or "wild clay" in her work. Joitakuita - Someones, ceramic sculptures and pastel paintings

Essi Hurme's exhibition consists of ceramic sculptures and pastel paintings. The pastel paintings by Essi Hurme are portraits and colour studies of imaginary persons. Her ceramic sculptures or"sitters", as she calls them are a part of a larger series that has been ongoing for years and this exhibition lets some of the sitters take their place on the Book gallery walls. Ari Jaskari (b,1958) is known for his photos depicting the Saimaa lake district and the people on its shores. His photography exhibition and book Oma koti - Sweet home are based on material that Jaskari photographed in his home town Anttola in the early 1980's. The photographs offer intimate glimpses into Jaskari's family life and community, everyday life.

Photojournalist Timo Kirves (1939-2021) worked as a photographer for over 60 years. He is best remembered for his photographs of people. In his last years he was enchanted by Havanna and travelled there three times to photograph. The exhibition and book Havanna Mix were finalized by his nephew, Antti Kirves who will be present at the gallery on Sat October 22nd from 1-3 PM.
